WHY STUDY BIBLICAL THEOLOGY?

Some excuse themselves from formal biblical and theological education by
assuming that Christ's disciples were unlearned men for the most part. The logical
progression from that assumed premise then is: So why should ministers and lay-leaders
study today?
But give pause for a moment and reflect. The simple fact is that no matter how divine such
sentiments may sound, they simply cannot be substantiated in truth. To the contrary, the
disciples were equipped with the finest and truest theological education available to
anyone of their day, and infinitely superior to that of the leading religious leaders.
They were taught for some three years by the Master Teacher of all time, Jesus Christ
Himself. His knowledge and understanding were boundless, and his were the ultimate in
unique communication skills. Christ not only educated their minds, but their hearts as
well. He then trained them in ministry skills with on-the-field practicums.
Christ taught his disciples to minister to the people, and to help them, regardless of
their intelligence or social levels - from those of abject ignorance to the highest of
intellectual achievers. Their purpose was not the mere accomplishment of philosophical
gymnastics through skillful debating, but to convert the very hearts and minds of
unbelievers by turning them to God. They were sent to the up-and-outer as well as the
down-and outer, to the wise and to the unwise, to the rich and the poor, to the Jew, the
Greek and the Barbarians (Romans 1:14-16).
Christ, in his bodily presence, is no longer with us to teach and train. Nevertheless,
through his Holy Spirit, He has given to the Church `teachers' and institutions of
theological instruction and training, both traditional and nontraditional. No person need
fail to reach the educational goals necessary to realize his full potential as he follows
God's call and will for his life.
